Being Visible vs. Being Accessible in the Book Community
Let’s have a family meeting real quick.
If you’re in the book community BookTok, Bookstagram, BookTube, or just that friend everybody texts like “what should I read next?”You’ve probably been told a million times “Be consistent! Show up! Post more!”
That’s cute. But here’s what they forgot to tell you:
Being SEEN and being AVAILABLE are NOT the same thing.
And if you don’t learn the difference, these people will run you ragged before you finish your next chapter.
Let’s talk about it.
Visibility = They Know You Got Good Taste
Being visible means you’re outside with it. You’re posting your reviews, hyping up your fave authors, talking about that book that had you up at 3 a.m. It’s how people start knowing you for certain genres or vibes.
You ever see somebody and go:
“Oh yeah that’s the girl with all the spicy mafia romances.”
Or
“That’s the homie that be putting me on to Black indie books I can’t find nowhere else.”
That’s visibility. We like that for you.
But visibility doesn’t mean everybody gets to be in your business 24/7.
Accessibility = Can They Bother You All Day?
Now accessibility… that’s when folks start acting like you work at Barnes & Noble. Full-time. No breaks.
It sounds like:
“Hey can you give me 10 books like that one you posted last week?”
“Can you explain the plot twist? I didn’t finish the book but I wanna know what happened.”
“Can you promo my cousin’s book real quick? She just started writing yesterday.”
LIKE… ma’am. PLEASE.
Let’s be clear:
You are not Goodreads.
You are not Amazon.
You are not the audiobook narrator.
And sitting on TikTok Live for 5 hours straight like you clocked in for part-time job is crazy. Beloved let’s not, ok?
You don’t have to give people unlimited access to you just because you posted a cute book stack yesterday.
Oh and while we’re here…
Going Live and talking reckless? Yeah… don’t do that.
Everything does not need to be said on Live. Talking about messy stuff, drama, or things that can damage your brand or your name?
DETRIMENTAL.
Why? Because the people watching you are not always supporters.
Remember: folks are always outside the club looking in. Wink, wink.
And trust they love to screen record.
Denzel Washington told Michael B. Jordan:
“Why would they pay money to see you on a weekend if they see you all week for free?
And listen that makes TOO much sense.
And while we’re at it…
Why would someone pay for the sauce when you giving them free samples all the time?
You are NOT Sam’s Club. Stop it.
We don’t do free taste tests here. This is premium content. Act like it.
Why This Matters (Especially for Book People)
Book content creators get hit differently because this community LOVES to act like we’re all best friends just because we read the same book. And I love y’all, but also… no.
• You can engage with people publicly (comments, reading sprints, group chats) without being on FaceTime with everybody.
• You can host Lives that are intentional spoiler talks, wrap-ups, messy book debates not just sitting there vibing with crusty eyes.
• You can build community around BOOKS not around burning out your energy like you working double shifts.
Your creativity is the gift. Protect it like rent’s due.
Do’s & Don’ts for Visibility & Accessibility in the Book Streets
DO’s
• Post consistently with a PURPOSE. Don’t just drop book hauls to drop ‘em.
• Use highlights or pinned posts for FAQs. (“Where’s the indie book starter pack? It’s RIGHT THERE.”)
• Join or host organized book clubs or chats. Keeps the random “wyd” DMs down.
• Respond to comments IN PUBLIC. DMs? For friends, collabs, or checks only.
• Go Live with intention! Spoilers, recaps, drama. Not vibes. Strategy.
• Create boundaries. “DMs open for collabs, closed for foolishness.”
DON’Ts
• Don’t be guilted into answering every DM. You don’t work here.
• Don’t sit on Live just because everybody else is. This is not the Bored Creator Olympics.
• Don’t take every free book people offer you. Your TBR already look like student loan debt.
• Don’t let people pressure you to read faster. I’m reading at the speed my rent allows.
• Don’t overshare to “seem relatable.” Baby, I’m here for books—not trauma bonding.
• Don’t go Live talking crazy. The streets are watching. Protect your name.
• Don’t flood the timeline for free all week and expect people to value you on the weekend. You are the brand. Act accordingly.
• And don’t be Sam’s Club out here with the free samples. You’re the whole entrée. Respect yourself.
Final Thought
Be visible. Let the people know you got taste.
But too accessible? Nah. That’s how you go from BookTok star to “taking a break for my mental health” in 3 months.
Show up. Show love. Protect your peace.
Read. Recommend. Block weirdos. Repeat.

All of this!
